FRAGRANCE
The language of perfumery itself is indicative enough of its aesthetic qualities. A fragrance can be categorized based on 3 critical elements – Its concentration level, the family it belongs to and the notes in the scent. The concentration level of a fragrance signifies its intensity and longevity. Parfum, Eau De Parfum, Eau De Toilette andand Eau De Cologne are major fragrance concentration classifications
One of the most inevitable differentiator of a fragrance is the scent family it belongs to. Few of the widely known scent families are Floral, Chypre, Floral, Fougère, Marine, Citrus and Woody.
Analogous to the creation of a melody, the craft of perfumery is described in musical metaphors. The amalgamation of ingredients in a perfume is called a “composition” and it has three “notes” that unfold over time. The first note is called the top note and it can simply be understood as the first impression of a perfume. Top notes consist of small, light molecules which are relatively more volatile and evaporate quickly. Middle notes (also called heart notes) are predominant just before the top notes have evaporized. Scents from this note class appear anywhere from two minutes to one hour after the application of a perfume. Base notes appear while the middle notes are fading. Base Notes are often the fixatives used to strengthen and complement the lighter top and middle notes. Base notes are large, heavy molecules that evaporate slowly and do not usually emerge until 30 minutes after the application of a perfume.
